Wimbledon will follow the American and Aussie Opens in utilizing replay systems.
Replay technology will be launched at The Championships this year.
Athletes are granted the option to question particular rulings made by the official, following the protocol already in use at each of the US Open and the Australian Open.
The new system will be accessible on the main stadium and the number one court for the duration of the tournament and on the other four featured courts when they are staging singles matches.
This development follows just a season following the AELTC introduced ELC, which brought an end to the 147-year role of line officials.
Scope of Challenges
Competitors will not be permitted to dispute the accuracy of the electronic line calling, but they can request the official to review other decisions, such as:
- If a tennis ball has double-bounced.
- If a shot made contact with an rival's racket or person during play.
- Potential hindrance end of a point.
Notably, there will be no cap on the number of challenges a player can initiate.
A Recent Example
A recent example occurred in a recent tournament recently, where a top player initiated the review system against his opponent.
The British player conceded it was a tough situation for the official, but thought his rival had "played the rules quite well."
The umpire viewed a replay and ruled the player was guilty of interference, awarding the point to Medvedev.
Growing Trend
Video reviews aren't exclusive to major tournaments. The system has been in use at the US Open for two years and the Australian Open this year.
Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the ATP circuit will have video reviews implemented at every one of its events.
Further Updates
Another innovation at The Championships 2025 involves the addition of graphical cues on displays to support the audio calls from the ELC system.
This solves instances where fans have sometimes been unsure if a shot was in or out.
Finally, with exactly 100 days to go until the start of the Championships, organizers have further announced an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifiers in Roehampton.
