Trump's Progressive Warning Overlooks The Continent's Real Threat: Economic Decline.

The recent US national security strategy offers a misguided assessment of the European Union. The document asserts that unrestrained immigration and what it terms "woke" agendas pose an existential risk to the continent's identity. Yet, this argument is based on a fundamental misreading of the reality. The true challenge facing the EU is not societal but technological and economic backwardness.

A Glaring Growth Gap Separating the US and Europe

The data reveal a stark contrast. Between 2008 and 2023, US GDP grew by eighty-seven percent, compared to a mere thirteen and a half percent increase for the EU. During this period, European income per person dropped from over three-quarters to just 50% of the US level. Strikingly, even the poorest US state now has a greater average income than major EU nations like France and Italy.

Today, roughly 50% of the global top fifty tech companies are American, while only four are European.

The Technological Shortfall: A Critical Problem

This widening disparity is driven by superior efficiency gains in the US, fueled by breakthroughs and higher total factor productivity. The scene of global tech dominance is overwhelmingly US-centric. Over the past five decades, 241 US firms have scaled into companies valued at more than ten billion dollars, versus only fourteen in Europe.

This gap prompts a pressing question: In the race for tomorrow's sectors like AI, semiconductors, and quantum computing, where does Europe stand? Most analysts concede it is largely a two-horse race between the US and China, with Europe starting at a significant disadvantage.

Underlying Factors of Europe's Innovation Gap

Several key factors explain this technological divide.

  • Financing Ecosystem: The United States has a far deeper and more dynamic system for financing new ventures. The EU still lacks a genuine capital markets union, a factor that limits the scale of emerging companies.
  • Bureaucratic Hurdles: Excessive and fragmented rules hinder Europe. A US startup can launch a service under a single regulatory framework to access a consumer base of hundreds of millions. The European Union, despite a bigger population, is divided among twenty-seven separate systems, creating huge market obstacles.
  • Mindset Differences: Attitudes toward entrepreneurial failure vary greatly. In some EU nations, business failure was historically met with penalties, whereas in the United States, it is often considered a badge of experience.
  • Defense Spending: The United States enjoys a deeply integrated innovation pipeline linking defense and academia. Europe's chronic underinvestment in defense has weakened its ability in pioneering research.

A Path Forward: Grounds for Cautious Optimism

In spite of these hurdles, there are causes for hope. Policymakers are growing more conscious of the severe threat and have begun to propose serious reform. Key reports on European competitiveness and the single market highlight the need for sweeping reforms.

With the right policies and rule changes, these assets could support far greater levels of business-led breakthroughs.

Europe retains considerable strengths: skilled human capital, top-tier education systems, and world-class labs. Coupled with a vast domestic consumer base and high savings rates, these elements have the potential to trigger a surge of venture creation.

Crucially, even if the EU does not take the lead in creating next-generation technologies, it can still dramatically increase economic output by implementing and tailoring innovations from elsewhere.

An Inflection Point

Europe now faces a decisive moment. As the saying goes, decline often happens "gradually and then suddenly". To date, Europe's technological decline has been steady. However, without decisive action to tackle its deep-seated problems, today's gradual weakening could turn into a rapid and permanent loss of global economic relevance.
