Tetris Didn't Succeed at This Gaming Ceremony — Another Award Type Might Solve This

As any major honors show nears, you'll find a clamor for the addition of new categories to acknowledge underappreciated efforts and delight the spirits of enthusiasts who have specialized interests.

A fellow writer has already made advocating for terror-themed awards. It would be amazing. So would strategy board titles, this being someone's personal cause. But they will have to forgive me if I try to elbow in front because like all dedicated enthusiasts, I have a cast-iron argument supporting my request remains most pressing above others. Here's the proposal: We need a classification for brain-teasing titles.

Organizing Gaming Categories

Classifying creative works defies precise measurement; it remains highly personal, and inevitably generate discussions and end in fuzzy definitions. This explains why film award organizations steer clear of genre categories. Yet it remains an essential concession for the industry of video games, showing incredible range they barely qualify a single creative category.

For the full spectrum of gaming accomplishments to receive acknowledgment, while allowing diverse titles to receive proper recognition, genre categories are essential.

Existing Game Classification System

Prominent interactive entertainment events presently include award types recognizing Action, Adventure-action titles, RPG experiences, Fighting, Sim/Strategy, plus athletic and racing experiences. Together, these six categories actually cover a lot of ground, and you can find room accommodating various experiences.

Not so for puzzle games. No appropriate category exists for their placement. Think about these recent excellent titles, showing diverse approaches: building puzzles in a particular game, intense tile-matching from another release, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles of a third title. Which classification works among existing types? Unfortunately, nowhere.

The Representation Problem

There are dozens of brilliant puzzle games released every year lacking appropriate categories during gaming ceremonies, except when they manage to fit classification types such as Mobile Game, Virtual reality experiences, and the highly challenging Indie races.

  • A renowned logic title got overlooked for anything in 2014
  • Another imaginative release was excluded during that ceremony
  • Popular arranging title was overlooked recently
  • Only a few puzzle games managed to sneak into independent or mobile categories

Value of Brain-Teasers

Frequently they represent small games, yet the craft in brain-teasers is of massive significance. Well-known matching games rank among most engaged experiences in the world continuing this trend for many years.

The iconic tile-matching title rivals well-known building titles competing to become highest-selling title ever; it additionally competes for best game of all time. Puzzle games are foundational to the art of video games, and they are in conversation with almost every other genre.

Proposal and Rationale

Logic titles wouldn't face this problem. It would be easy to populate five nominees engaging, different, qualified experiences every year with ease — or rather, with difficulty, since numerous excellent many worthy titles.

And to reiterate, these represent titles lacking appropriate categories in important events. Logic title developers function at the challenging frontier interactive creation, developing some of most fundamental forms of the video game form. Just like film action specialists, they merit acknowledgment. Let’s not keep them waiting generations.
