Slash and Burn: Budget Chief Embraces Chance to Cut, Fire and Cancel

Former President Donald J. Trump took to online platforms early Thursday to address looming federal reductions stemming from the ongoing government closure.

Via his statement, the former president mentioned a planned discussion with Russ Vought, noting they would establish which federal departments to cut and whether these eliminations would be temporary or permanent.

Controversial Figure

The budget director, who directs the OMB, has publicly suggested he aims to "put federal workers in trauma," according to earlier reports.

His involvement with the conservative blueprint, a comprehensive plan for restructuring the federal government, has established him as a main subject for Democratic criticism.

Recent Actions

This week, Vought disclosed the termination of approximately eight billion dollars in climate funding that he labeled as "climate agenda financing."

Additionally revealed the suspension of about $18 billion in government money for major infrastructure projects in the state of New York, particularly targeting the constituency of Democratic leaders in the legislature.

Long-Awaited Opportunity

Based on official communications, the budget director had been preparing for this exact scenario for months.

"Initiatives that lacked required funding will bear the brunt of a shutdown," he wrote in government documents.

The memo also instructed departments to evaluate layoff notifications for personnel in programs deemed inconsistent with administration objectives.

Legal Challenges

Vought has championed the executive power to impound funds that Congress has previously authorized through laws.

He has suggested plans to pursue the judicial review on the parameters of the Watergate-era legislation, which was designed to limit presidential authority to block spending.

Political Concerns

Despite the aggressive stance, certain GOP members have expressed concern about the political implications of these decisions.

Early polling show that a majority of voters hold responsible the government closure on Trump and Republicans rather than the opposition.

A GOP legislator commented that the budget director might be "out of sync politically" than Trump, expressing concern about squandering political advantage through excessively forceful use of executive power.
