Seven alleged individuals of Germany's far-left group face trial over series of attacks

A group of seven people accused of being the German far-left militant group Antifa Ost went on trial on this week, facing charges for violent actions against rightwing extremists that earned them the nickname “Hammer Gang”.

International terror listing and legal charges

Recently, the United States classified Antifa Ost as a terrorist group together with several other left-wing extremist and anarchist networks.

German prosecutors state the group was behind targeting sites in Germany and Hungary between 2018 and 2023. Included in the allegations is the repeated targeting of a restaurant owner in central Thuringia, whose venue was known as a meeting point for rightwing activists.

Certain individuals are said to have employing hammers against presumed rightwing extremists, causing several severely injured.

Trial details and cross-border allegations

The trial involving seven defendants is scheduled to continue until July 2026 in the city of Dresden. A pair of suspects, named as Johann G and Paul M., also face charges for attacks in Budapest during February 2023, around an annual event known as the “day of honour” that attracts far-right participants from throughout the continent.

In a related case, another German activist, Maja T, is currently on trial in Hungary for multiple charges of attempted violent acts against neo-Nazis in the lead-up to the identical event in 2023.

Regional context and group hierarchy

The former East Germany has historically served as a hotbed for both right-wing extremist and anti-immigration youth organizations, as well as the frequently radical antifascist groups that oppose them.

Authorities characterize Johann G as a high-ranking member within the organization, tasked with planning attacks and recruiting accomplices.

Alongside Paul M, he is alleged to have arranged training sessions where leftwing extremists trained in fighting methods and rehearsed attacks. In storage facilities managed by Paul M, the network allegedly accumulated tools, pepper spray, concealment items and mobile phones.

Previous convictions and international reactions

Another militant previously active with the organization, Lina E, became a cause celebre within some far-left activist circles following her 2023 guilty verdict for targeting suspected right-wing individuals.

The US designation renders organization affiliates ineligible to enter the US, blocks financial holdings they could possess within the American economy and criminalizes offering assistance to them.

Germany's far-right AfD party applauded the American move and called on the government in Berlin to follow suit. In contrast, the German foreign ministry merely commented it had “taken note” of the US designation.

“The danger from the organization has recently decreased significantly. Key leaders and most aggressive participants have received convictions or are in custody.”
