Individuals Discontinuing Anti-Obesity Jabs Regain Weight at a Quadrupled Rate Than Dieters

Weight management involves ongoing approaches.

Fresh analysis suggests that patients who stop using new GLP-1 drugs like semaglutide or tirzepatide tend to recover shed pounds far faster than those who end conventional diet and exercise regimens.

Research printed in a major health publication shows that while obese individuals frequently drop about a fifth of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the mass is regained at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.

"Individuals purchasing such treatments need to be informed of the risk of rapid weight regain when the treatment is stopped," cautioned researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of recovery means a reversion to original weight within about one and a half years.

Analyzing Therapies

The analysis, which looked at dozens of trials involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the results of the injectable medications with other pills.

The team point out that people who shed pounds through dieting typically have a less rapid creep back—approximately 100 grams monthly—after stopping.

The Reason for the Quick Regain

Experts suggest the way of the jabs explains the accelerated weight return.

The injections copy a natural hormone called GLP-1, which helps regulate feelings of fullness.

"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 levels several times higher than the body's typical production may cause the body to produce less of its own natural GLP-1, and may also reduce sensitivity to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.

"Discontinuation of this medication leads to appetite is unsuppressed, making binge eating far more likely."

A Lifelong Issue?

Health authorities recommend the injections for individuals with weight-linked health risks, accompanied by prescribed diet and exercise modifications.

Professionals argue that, considering the high risk of relapse, the treatment should be considered life-long.

This perspective is echoed by drug manufacturers, who note that the findings "underscore the chronic character of obesity," similar to managing conditions like diabetes.

User Experiences

Individuals who have come off the jabs report a intense return of cravings.

"I experienced a trigger flipping and you're instantly extremely hungry," said a patient.

The struggle is worsened if patients have not established sustainable lifestyle or habit changes during therapy.

Growing Use

Figures show that millions of adults in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the past year, with desire continuing to grow.

  • Adoption is higher among women than males.
  • The middle-aged age group shows the greatest usage rates.
  • Many access the medications through private healthcare rather than the NHS.

In conclusion, researchers caution that while GLP-1 drugs are effective agents for weight loss, they are not a permanent cure and lasting health benefits hinges on combined behavioural support.
