Crawley Unaware of Stokes' Controversial 'Frail Characters' Remarks

The English opening batter Zak Crawley suggested he was not familiar with comments made by skipper Ben Stokes about the dressing room not being "those lacking fortitude".

Stokes delivered those words in multiple conversations in the wake of his team's defeat in the second match of the Ashes series versus Australia earlier this month.

In the lead-up to the Adelaide Test, where England now face a series loss at the earliest opportunity, Stokes stated he had allowed his sentiment to "drift around" among the squad.

"I've done all the talking over the past two days that I required," said Stokes.

However, after the opener scored 85 on the fourth day in Adelaide, he commented: "I didn't see that."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. Our approach is to take anything stated in the media with some skepticism," Crawley continued.

Frank Discussions and Consistent Messaging

The captain made the "fragile individuals" observation subsequent to England suffered a loss in Brisbane to fall 2-0 down.

The England squad afterwards took a break to a Queensland resort between the second and third Tests.

Prior to this match, he said his players had held "raw" conversations and he had urged them to "show a bit of dog" in their battle to stay alive in the Ashes battle.

Yet, Crawley asserted the guidance from Stokes and coach Brendon McCullum had stayed consistent with their prior tenure in leadership.

"It's been very positive, the same as always," noted the opener. "The focus is on maintaining positivity, play our way, with lots of freedom. It felt like we were capable of an extraordinary feat going into this game."

The Hosts On the Verge of Historic Series Victory

Crawley's dismissal on day four was part of a crucial triple-strike by Australia spinner Lyon.

Lyon's triple strike in 20 deliveries – he also bowled Harry Brook and Stokes himself – meant England 207-6 in pursuit of a daunting total of 435.

Consequently, the home team require four wickets on the final day to move to an unassailable three-nil advantage after three Tests.

A loss would prolong England's winless run in this country to 18 Tests and ensure a fourth straight overseas Ashes series loss.

This series will be completed in just eleven days of cricket – with England fell the initial matches in two and four days respectively.

The last time 1921, when Australia sealed a series win in England in eight days, has the destination of the Ashes urn been decided more swiftly. The hosts have also won in 11 days on two other occasions in the 21st century.

"It's disheartening," admitted the batsman. "Our goal was to win the Ashes and we're staring down the barrel now."

"There remains significant pride at stake and we'll definitely view it with that mindset," Crawley added.

"It's been tough. Australia is a formidable side. It was inevitably tough touring here to face them. They entered as the front-runners coming in to it have demonstrated their quality."

Pope's Position Under Scrutiny

While Crawley's performance in the third Test probably answers doubts about his short-term place in the England team, Ollie Pope appears under immense pressure for his spot in the Melbourne Test on Boxing Day.

Pope was out for 17 runs in England's second innings on Saturday, adding to his poor record against Australia.

In 16 Ashes innings, the Surrey man has failed to score a fifty and boasts an average of 17.62.

A solitary other English batsman in over a century – Dennis Amiss – has played as many times in the top six in Ashes Tests and recorded a poorer average.

However, Crawley insisted any suggestion his teammate is being scrutinised comes from "the media" – meaning the press – "and not within the team."

"We all know how good of a player he is," said Crawley. "Ollie has enjoyed a productive year to be frank."

"He has produced some really good knocks. This is noise from the outside. There is no discussion like that on Ollie in the camp," he concluded.
