Meteorological devices containing numerous packages of cigarettes have interfered with air travel in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was forced to close for an extended period when numerous of them drifted across the country's airspace.
Flight Disruptions
The operational halt led to the cancellation of 30 flights disrupting six thousand travelers, with officials warning that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
Border Security Response
Authorities reported that multiple atmospheric balloons were detected entering Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with a pair of them ending up precisely above the main terminal.
Up to 14 of the weather balloons sent during the weekend drifted across the capital region, which is home to Lithuania's main urban center and adjacent to the frontier with Belarus.
Illegal Goods Seizure
A minimum of 11 balloons carrying numerous containers of contraband smoking materials have been collected so far, though additional discoveries are expected, according to customs agents.
International Illegal Trade
Despite the disruption, representatives clarified that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - Belarusian smoking products - are not unusual in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
Since January, over five hundred weather devices have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been recorded last year.
Regional Consequences
Meanwhile, the border area of Poland, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has documented over one hundred incidents in which illegal goods were transported from its neighbor using the weather devices.
Criminal Methodology
When questioned about why criminal organizations employ a technique that proves especially affected by weather conditions rather than more controllable drones, representatives elaborated that "Weather devices are simple mechanisms used by illegal traders - they are less expensive than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Border Protection Aims
Representatives further stated that "Our services' aim is to seize the largest possible volumes of smuggled items and to arrest masterminds and involved individuals so that such operations become unprofitable and do not pose risk to commercial air travel."
European Tensions
These airspace violations occur during a time of growing anxiety in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have created aviation problems across the continent.
Parallel situations in neighboring countries have caused EU officials to speed up talks about strengthening air defences throughout European airspace.
